A legendary, no-nonsense football manager is dragged out of retirement for his toughest job yet: coaching the Macaulay Macaws, the worst girls’ under-11s team in Cambridgeshire. Together, this out-of-touch octogenarian and a team of loveable misfits must learn from each other to score their first goal, win their first game, and prove that heart can triumph over talent.

Series Synopsis

The Macaws is a warm, witty, and heartfelt 6×30′ drama-comedy that follows the Macaulay Macaws, an all-girls’ football team with a perfect record: zero wins, zero goals, and zero hope. Their fortunes change with the arrival of ‘Razor’ Ron Andrews, an 83-year-old ex-pro manager from a bygone era, who is reluctantly persuaded to coach them by his football-mad granddaughter, Alex.

Ron’s old-school methods, all gruff discipline and tactical drills, initially clash with the realities of managing a diverse group of pre-teen girls, each navigating their own personal challenges. The team includes Millie, a captain buckling under anxiety; Charlotte, a goalkeeper with ADHD and OCD who can’t concentrate for 90 seconds; and Sophia, a defender whose fierce tackles are fueled by unmanaged anger.

While Ron teaches the girls resilience and the fundamentals of the beautiful game, they, in turn, teach him about empathy, modern mental health, and the true meaning of teamwork. The series deftly balances laugh-out-loud comedy with poignant, authentic explorations of the issues young people face, from body dysmorphia and grief to anxiety and self-doubt. Supported by a cast of endearing adults, including the team’s relentlessly positive, but secretly struggling, founder Jill, and Ron’s wise wife, Pearl, the Macaws embark on a hilarious and moving journey not to win the league, but to find their confidence, their voice, and their first-ever goal.

The Macaws is “Ted Lasso” meets “Bend It Like Beckham” for a new generation. It’s an uplifting, empowering, and non-patronising series that celebrates the power of community, the importance of mental wellbeing, and the unbreakable bonds forged on a muddy pitch on a Saturday morning.
