Logline:
The ageing heroes and villains of a beloved British circuit must stage one final, chaotic show, forcing them to confront the painful truth that their greatest battles have always been outside the ring.
Synopsis:
WORLD OF WRESTLING is a poignant and darkly comic drama set in the grubby basement of the Cambridge Corn Exchange in the winter of 1988. As the ageing gladiators of a beloved British wrestling circuit prepare for a seemingly ordinary night, their promoter, the silver-tongued Dickie Daniels, drops a bombshell: he is secretly negotiating to sell the entire promotion to flashy American investors.
The news sends shockwaves through the dressing room, forcing each wrestler to confront their identity and future. Big Bobby Britton, the patriotic “good guy,” faces the devastating betrayal of a promised championship title, realising his beloved persona may be obsolete. Rocketball Rio, the cynical veteran “heel,” is offered a chance at survival if he plays along, forcing him to choose between loyalty and self-preservation. The masked Kento Kawasaki fights to protect the anonymity that gives him power, while the tag team The Zulu Brothers fracture under the pressure, their familial and professional bonds tested by the promise of a new, gimmick-driven style.
As the chaotic, and comedic, backstage drama unfolds, full of petty squabbles, long-held grudges, and last-minute script changes, the wrestlers must decide whether to put on one final, unified show for the loyal fans waiting in the arena, or to let their personal grievances and fears cause the whole world they’ve built to collapse before the first bell can ring.
A heartfelt elegy for a bygone era of entertainment, WORLD OF WRESTLING explores the fragile line between performance and reality, and the desperate search for meaning and legacy when the spotlight begins to fade.
