Road trips are a quintessential American experience and for good reason. With vast landscapes, diverse cultures, and picturesque small towns, a USA road trip can be a life-changing experience. However, planning the perfect road trip requires careful thought and preparation.
I’ve made several memorable road trips, from New York to New Orleans, Baltimore to Los Angeles, and San Francisco to Toronto. They were incredible, unforgettable experiences, and all had one thing in common: lots and lots of planning. Let me share some of the critical things to consider and plan for when plotting your perfect USA road trip.
Choose your route
The first step to planning the perfect USA road trip is to choose your route. There are countless routes, depending on your interests and available time. Some popular ways include the Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, and the Great River Road. Consider distance, scenery, and attractions when choosing your route.
I like to have a theme for the trips I plan. For my trip from New York to New Orleans, it was a music-themed trip; we explored famous punk venues in NYC, the honky tonks of Nashville, Sun Records, Stax Studios, and Beale Street in Memphis, and the famous Jazz scene of New Orleans.
Plan your stops
Once you have chosen your route, plan your stops. Research the must-see attractions along your way and plan your itinerary accordingly. Be sure also to research local restaurants and lodging options. Booking lodging in advance can save you time and money, especially during peak travel seasons. Once you know your dates, you can also check the listings for festivals and events.
While every road trip I planned was first made using large cities and prominent stops, I then explored the route on google maps. Looking closely at each segment, you’ll find unique and exciting attractions and sights a little off the beaten track, bringing the trip to life.
Pack smart
Packing for a road trip can be a challenge, but with careful planning, it can be a breeze. Create a packing list and prioritise items based on importance. Essentials such as snacks, water, and a first aid kit should be packed in an easily accessible location. Be sure to pack appropriate clothing for the weather and any planned activities.
For road trips by car, bringing some bedding, including a pillow, bottom sheet, and blanket is always advised. You never know when you will end up in a cheap motel which doens’t quite meet your hygiene standards.
Budget wisely
Road trips can be expensive, so it is important to budget wisely. Consider the cost of lodging, transportation, food, and attractions when creating your budget. Be sure also to set aside emergency funds for unexpected expenses.
If you have a strict route planned, booking your accommodation as early as possible is advised. Airbnb can be a great way to get an affordable room. If you are travelling in a group, bring a blow-up airbed so you can share hotel rooms more efficiently. Another thing to consider is staying outside the big cities and closer to the highway; you’ll find the best cheap rooms and be a quick drive from everything.
Embrace spontaneity
While planning is essential, embracing spontaneity during a road trip is vital. Leave room in your itinerary for unexpected detours or attractions. Some of the best road trip experiences come from unexpected discoveries.
Planning the perfect USA road trip requires careful consideration and preparation. Choosing your route, planning your stops, packing smart, and budgeting wisely, are all keys to a successful trip, but be careful not to over plan. Make sure to leave rest days and parts of your unplanned road trip. Consider leaving an extra day free between destinations and pick a random town to spend the night as you go. Some of the best experiences I’ve had on road trips were during those unplanned days and nights in random towns.
